Nyerere National Park
One of the biggest national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Africa is Nyerere National Park. It is situated in the northern region of the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. Explorer Fredrick Courtney Selous, also known as Selous, was killed in battle along the River Rufiji. The late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the country of Tanzania’s first president, is honoured by the name Nyerere National Park.
The Tanzania National Parks Authority created Nyerere National Park in 2019. (TANAPA). The vast River Rufiji inhabits an area of 30,893 square kilometres in the park.
All seasons are good for visiting Nyerere National Park, but from July to October, when the vegetation is sparser and there are more animals and birds to see because the River Rufiji serves as the park’s main source of fresh water, is the best time to see animals.
The Nyerere National Park’s attractions
Elephants, cape buffaloes, lions, hippos, leopards, wild dogs, zebras, the magnificent sable antelope, giraffes, hyenas, wildebeest, gazelles, and many other animal species can be found in Nyerere National Park.
Over 400 bird species have been spotted in the park, including African fish eagles, Malachite Kingfishers, African Skimmers, and Bohm’s Bee-eaters. Savannah grasslands and Miombo woodlands abound in the park.
